Thin Hair, Not Fair? 6 Ways to Fight Hair Loss & Thinning Hair

Among the six treatments for hair loss recommended in the Today.com story are compounded minoxidil (rogaine alternatives), nutritionals like Viviscal Pro, laser therapy with LaserCap, PRP Platelet Rich Plasma. Other therapies used by full time hair restoration physicians include no-scalpel, no-stitch Hair Transplantation with NeoGraft or using the the ARTAS robotic system.

For women, the most common triggers are hormonal (pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome) or hereditary, but autoimmune conditions and nutritional deficiencies can also be to blame. And unlike men, we tend to lose hair gradually and all over the head, so it can take longer to detect. "Many of my patients notice a change in the shape of their face as the temples recede, a widening of their part line or that their ponytail is smaller in diameter," says hair restoration specialist Dr. Alan Bauman, who heads the Bauman Medical Group in Boca Raton, Florida.

Luckily, there's a lot that can be done, from lasers to lotions and everything in between. And you'll be rewarded for treating it early. "I liken it to sun damage — it's never too late to address the problem, but it will get worse with time if you don't slow the progression," says Bauman. Here, the best, doctor-approved treatments from easy-peasy to full-on offense.

Check out at-home lasers.

Discreet enough to fit under a cute cloche, the Laser Cap is a powerful (but pricey) way to increase hair mass. "We've had excellent results using laser therapy in-office for several years, but now most patients are treating themselves out of the office," says Bauman. "The device emits low-level laser light treatment proven to enhance growth while you go about your day. It's painless, chemical-free, has no side effects and you see results in 90 days." (And it's a great excuse to expand your hat collection.)

Investigate PRP.

Ready for the big guns? "Platelet-rich plasma is the newest frontier," says Bauman. "It allows us to exploit your body's own pharmacy of growth factors. It isn't an overnight cure, but we can clinically measure improvements in several weeks, and they're noticeable to the naked eye after six months." Here's how it works: A small sample of the patient's blood is processed to separate out the platelets and stem-cell-rich plasma. In some cases, additional "bioscaffolding" — sometimes placental tissue from screened donors — is blended in to improve the effects. Then, the custom cocktail is shallowly injected under the scalp under local anesthesia. Sounds intense, but "it's comfortable, takes less than an hour and there is no recovery phase," promises Bauman.

The key is accurate diagnosis, effective prescription treatments and proper routine follow-up HairCheck measurements. For more info about board certified hair restoration physician, Dr. Alan Bauman, visit http://www.baumanmedical.com

PRP Platelet Rich Plasma for Hair Regrowth Pitfalls + Best Practices

Every day I get questions about #PRP Platelet Rich Plasma and it's amazing potential for hair regrowth in men and women because the word is spreading about its potential benefits for those with thinning hair.

Unfortunately, we see that more and more docs are offering this treatment without adequate diagnosis, without careful patient-selection, without quality equipment, NO measuring of platelet concentrates, not to mention careless, uncomfortable and improper application of the PRP, and especially... lack of tracking of results. It is frustrating.

After performing thousands of PRP procedures for scalp and hair in my practice, I can honestly say all of the above (and more) need to be addressed with care and consideration if we are to adequately help patients.

Sure, results can vary but as in any field uneducated patients and untrained docs are a high-risk recipe for disappointing results. The good news is that this National Hair Loss Awareness Month #NHLAM and in honor of #FollicleFriday we are getting the word out about what patients are good candidates for PRP hair regrowth and what physicians are qualified to perform these treatments and continuing our hand-on HairCoach training classes for doctors and other professionals who want to provide these treatments using best practices.

FAQ: Topical Finasteride Solution with Minoxidil for Hair Loss

Formula 82F - Finoxidil - Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil

NEW: FORMULA 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution for Hair Loss - FAQs

What is Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution - Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution is a compounded prescription solution containing the FDA-approved hair growth medications finasteride 0.25% and minoxidil 5%, as well as retinoic acid for enhanced penetration of minoxidil and sebum reduction, a mild low-dose anti-inflammatory, oleanolic acid— a mild anti-androgen, and other beneficial ingredients such as algae extracts without any propylene glycol (a common irritant) at a neutral pH.

Who should use Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution? - Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution offers the powerful DHT-reducing effect of finasteride along with a deeply penetrating minoxidil formulation in a non-greasy, user-friendly, hairstyle friendly, compounded prescription formula that may be appropriate for men and some postmenopausal women in the medical management of hair loss.

What can the average person expect to achieve with Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution? - Twice daily minoxidil has been shown to regrow hair in up to 85% of men and 60% of women. Finasteride was FDA-approved as an oral prescription hair regrowth pill for men in 1998. While 90% effective orally, concerns about systemic side effects led researchers to explore the benefits of a topical compounded preparation of finasteride. Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution offers the synergistic approach of the only two medications FDA approved for hair regrowth.

How is Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution applied? - Dr. Bauman recommends that 30 drops of Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution should initially be applied as directed—twice daily to the entire scalp that is “at risk” and focusing primarily in the areas of hair thinning.  Formula 82F should be distributed evenly and allowed to absorb for at least three hours before showering, swimming or participating in heavy physical or other activity that may cause sweating. The special droptainer bottle allows for the accurate application of medication directly where you need it... on the scalp, not on your hair.

How does Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution work? - It is well accepted that minoxidil is a potent hair growth stimulator, causing resting follicles to produce hair, and weak follicles to produce longer thicker and more pigmented hair over time with consistent use. Oral finasteride is used to reduce dihydrotesterone (DHT), a known trigger for hair loss, in order to enhance hair growth. New research suggests that topical finasteride can be an effective treatment for hair loss and may reduce the chance of side effects that may occur with oral treatment.

What areas are normally treated with Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution? - Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution typically works to protect and enhance hair growth wherever there are weakened hair follicles or areas “at-risk.” Common treatment areas include the crown/vertex area, top of the scalp, as well as the frontal/temple areas.

What are the typical side effects of Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution compared to other treatments? - In patients with a light complexion and skin tone, the scalp may appear slightly more pink than usual due to increased blood flow from the treatment. Redness, dryness, flaking, inflammation and discomfort at the scalp can occur but are rare with with Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution because it has anti-inflammatory properties and contains absolutely NO propylene glycol (found in over-the-counter minoxidil solutions). For patients concerned about the risk of sexual side effects from oral finasteride, research suggests that Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution may significantly reduce those risks. Discontinue therapy and notify Dr. Bauman immediately if you experience any side effects from a treatment.

Will Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution leave my hair greasy? - No. The sophisticated proprietary process used to create Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution allows it to be absorbed more quickly and leave no sticky residue common with over-the-counter minoxidil or other prescription solutions. Applied correctly, there should be little to no impact on your hairstyle.

When will I see results with Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution? - Increases in hair growth can be seen as early as ten weeks using a video scalp microscope or HairCheck measurements. Cosmetic benefits may take six to twelve months to be noticeable in the mirror or photos.

How do I get started with Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution? - A one-on-one consultation with board-certified hair restoration physician, Dr. Alan J. Bauman, M.D., is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate for Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution. Routine medical tracking is recommended in order to achieve the best possible results with Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution or any hair restoration regimen.

Who should NOT use Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution? - Women of childbearing age should NOT use or come into contact with Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution or areas topically treated with the medication for at least three hours due to a risk of birth defects in a developing male fetus. Like all medications, keep Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution safely out of reach of children. Please refer to the pharmacy product insert for further information.

Where can I buy Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution? - Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution is only available with a prescription from Bauman Medical Hair Transplant and Hair Loss Treatment Center in Boca Raton, Florida. After your private one-on-one long-distance or in-person consultation, Dr. Bauman may prescribe and recommend Formula 82F Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil Solution.  For more information, visit https://baumanmedical.com/product/topical-finasteride/

Medical Grade Hair and Scalp Prosthetic Made with 3D-Printing for Dr. Alan J. Bauman’s Hair Transplant Patient Unveiled at CARF Alopecia Conference

Drb_carf_CNC_lecture-presentation_alopeciaMedical Grade Hair and Scalp Prosthetic Made with 3D-Printing for Dr. Alan J. Bauman’s Hair Transplant Patient Unveiled at CARF Alopecia Conference

Top hair loss doctors, researchers and over 150 patients met and spoke with Cicatricial Alopecia patient ‘Ivory’ who underwent an innovative hair restoration method by Dr. Bauman combining the latest permanent FUE/FUT hair transplantation procedure with a custom 3D-printed hair and scalp prosthetic device.

BOCA RATON, FL (PRWEB) JUNE 15, 2016

Internationally recognized hair loss expert, Dr. Alan J. Bauman, recently teamed up with the Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation or CARF to raise awareness on scarring alopecia as well as educate patients, researchers and physicians on some of the new options available for this currently incurable condition.

"This year's conference was a huge success, and allowed us to further CARF's mission to provide education and patient support, raise public awareness, and advance and promote research. It truly was a collaborative team effort, and we are so thankful to have the support from Dr. Bauman, and others in the hair restoration community, who are helping to improve the care of patients with scarring alopecia," said Nicole Rogers, MD, FAAD and Conference Chair. Dr. Bauman was invited by Dr. Rogers and CARF to be a featured speaker at their 7th International Patient-Doctor Conference, June 3-5, in New Orleans, #CARF2016. His presentation, “The Best of All Worlds,” was focused on the combined use of a medical grade 3D printed hair and scalp prosthetic along with hair transplantation in a patient with traction alopecia and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia. Dr. Bauman and his patient, “Ivory,” were in attendance at the conference to discuss her experience with cicatricial alopecia and her treatment, which included hair transplantation and a custom CRLab CNC hair replacement system made in Bologna, Italy.

Cicatricial alopecia affected my self-confidence and has been self-limiting for me. I refused to see a new hair stylist, as I was afraid they would be shocked or ask numerous questions. I was afraid and ashamed to seek help. I also avoided activities, such as swimming or simply riding in a convertible,” said Dr. Bauman’s patient Ivory. “Now, my results are permanent and I feel 100% more confident. Dr. Bauman and my new CNC system have given me a new outlook for managing and coping with my hair loss.”

CARF-dralanbauman

Some of the experts who were in attendance to present and participate in the panel discussions along with Dr. Alan Bauman include Dr. Antonella Tosti, Dr. Yolanda Lenzy, Dr. Melissa Piliang, Dr. Lady Dy, Dr. Lynne Goldberg, Dr. Erin Boh, Dr. Marc Avram, Dr. Patricia Farris, Dr. Kate Holcomb, Dr. Wilma Bergfeld, Dr. Maria Hordinsky, Dr. Fonda Farah, Ms. Rita Wanser, Ms. Elayne Kuehler, Ms. Debbie Guastella and Dr. Jeff Donovan. This event was sponsored in part by Procter & Gamble, Lifes2Good (makers of Viviscal) and Cesare Ragazzi Laboratories (makers of the CRLab CNC Hair Replacement System).

“CARF is a truly unique organization that has really grown into a valuable resource for both patients and physicians,” Dr. Bauman commented.

Man gets more Tinder matches after hair transplant #firstimpression

We all know that first impressions count whether you are aiming for job interview or a date.

Richard King, 31, noticed he was getting much more attention from women after undergoing a hair transplant. He and his hair surgeon, Dr. Bessam Farjo, decided to set up two Tinder profiles for Richard – one featuring his new head of hair and the other with his pre-surgery mane. The two were surprised to find that Richard’s new locks increased his Tinder matches by 75 percent, receiving 203 matches compared to the 116 he got on his pre-transplant photos.

Japanese Scientists Grow Hair Follicles in Mice from Bioengineered Skin using iPS Stem Cells

Japanese scientists said Saturday they have bioengineered the skin organ known as the integumentary system in mice using induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells.

The achievement is likely to lead to further progress in regenerative medicine to treat severe burns, skin diseases and hair loss as the organ contains all the layers of skin tissues and appendages, such as hair follicles and sebaceous glands.

The group, made up of members from the Riken research institute, Tokyo University of Science, Kitasato University, Organ Technologies Inc. and others, cultured iPS cells from mice in vitro for one week and observed the formation of embryoid bodies with epithelial and mesenchymal cells. Next, the team, led by Riken’s Takashi Tsuji, transplanted some 30 such bodies with collagen gel in live mice.

Somewhat similar to the work that's been done at Sanford Burnham in California, Japanese scientists have grown hair follicles from bioengineered skin cells using iPS (induced pluripotent stem cells) in mice. Although there is a long way to go to achieve "unlimited" hair for humans, these research breakthroughs the beginning of stem cell hair loss "cures" which may be helpful for those suffering from various forms of alopecia. Male and female hair loss sufferers often lose self-esteem and self-confidence as coverage of the scalp diminishes due to hereditary (androgenetic alopecia) and other baldness conditions.

At Bauman Medical, we watch these stem cell hair growth breakthroughs with great anticipation and excitement and are looking forward to the day that this kind of therapy will be available for our hair loss patients!  Sincerely, Alan J. Bauman, M.D.  -  Diplomate, American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery

Woman posts warning about allergic reaction to henna hair dye

While allergic reactions to hair dye are much less common with henna than other salon-based color treatments or at-home boxed hair color products, they can still occur. This women posted a youtube video about her visit to an Emergency Room after having a hair dye treatment with henna. According to a report from Yahoo, she had had a previous allergic reaction to hair dye, hence the reason for opting for henna (which is believed to cause fewer problems and allergic reactions). After a small "test" area was treated with henna, she proceeded with the full scalp henna color treatment. Unfortunately, she experienced severe burning sensation of the scalp and progressively worse swelling of her face--leading to an ER visit.

Severe reactions to chemicals or other substances on the scalp can lead to hair loss due to hair follicles being "shut down" by the inflammation that is occurring.  Typically, hair loss from this kind of allergic reaction would begin to be noticed about six weeks after the reaction on the scalp.

Podcast: PRP for Hair Regrowth - Is Your Doctor Performing it Correctly?

PRP with BioD Extracellular Matrix (ECM) for Hair Growth: Is your doctor performing it correctly?

When it comes to combating hair thinning and hair loss, the latest non-invasive treatment is PRP, platelet rich plasma. But not every doctor is preparing and applying #PRP the same way. We may not know exactly why ECMs like #ACell and #BioD make the PRP work stronger and longer, but early studies support this observation. How is PRP performed by board-certified Hair Restoration Physician, Dr. Alan Bauman at +Bauman Medical Group Hair Transplant & Hair Loss Treatment Center? How often does it need to be repeated? How do we measure PRP results? What can you expect when PRP is performed with ECM Extracellular Matrix like ACell or BioD?  What benefit does PRP have for hair transplant patients?  Can PRP be used in conjunction with laser therapy or compounded minoxidil 82M?

Is Trumps Hair Real? The Answers From The Experts May Surprise You!

Is it real?  "Real interesting," they say!  Many speculate on its construction and infrastructure and even the experts cannot agree on exactly what Donald may or may not have done to enhance his hair.  One thing is for sure, regardless of your political persuasion, "Trump's Hair" is a frequent topic of conversation both online and off.  It even has it's own Twitter account @TrumpsHair which proclaims "I'm on top of the man who is on top of the world!"

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 6.42.32 AM

Although Mr. Trump is not a patient of mine, I was asked (along with the famous The Bald Truth radio talkshow host Spencer Kobren) to weigh in on the topic. Personally, I suspect that he may have had an outdated invasive surgical flap procedure and perhaps some transplantation years and years ago, which "locks" him into his current style. Today's minimally-invasive procedures like NeoGraft FUE and ARTAS robotic hair transplantation restore hair growth permanently without linear scars or significant downtime--and modern therapies like PRP, laser therapy, Minoxidil 82M and others help keep the hair you have growing strong. Solving the mystery of Donald's Hair may not be easy... but at least the experts have some opinions. Visit Plastic Surgery Portal below for the complete infographic. Sincerely, Dr. Alan J. 3-D printed hair helps cancer survivors have realistic hair - TODAY.com

It's yet to be seen exactly how 3-D printing will change the world, but the technology is already proving to be an asset in the prosthetics industry — in this case, hair.

Danielle Grillo of Transitions Hair Solutions in New Jersey has made dozens of 3-D printed hairpieces for people who suffer from hair loss, many of them cancer survivors. She's worked in the industry for more than two decades, and says the 3-D printed hairpieces, while expensive, "are the closest thing to your natural scalp and hair," Grillo told TODAY.
